Our Story.

Our Story... When my sister Brenda and I decided that our mom Carmela was getting too old to be left alone. We both chalked it off to old age. We made the decision to have mom move in with my sister and her husband. Not long after mom moved in, Brenda noticed some disturbing behaviors. Mom would wear the same clothes for days. There was always an argument over having her change her clothes. She suddenly became a picky eater. She was constantly changing the setting on the television with the remote... I could hear the frustration in my sisters voice growing with each conversation.

The first signs.
  •  Finding unopened unpaid bills thrown in drawers,
  • Constant phone calls asking us where things were,
  • Garbage not getting to the curb on garbage day.
  • Stories of how mom took a fall while checking the mailbox.

My initial reaction was concern for my sister. We never considered my mom could be suffering from dementia. The one thing as a family we were all grateful for was that, as our mom aged she still had her wits about her. The last thing anyone wanted to believe was that our mom could be losing her mind.
My sister began complaining about my mom being up several times through the night. On one occasion my sister received a phone call from her door man, that mom was in the lobby at 1 am. It became clear something needed to be done. Thus the journey began...
