Caregivers Tap Into Community Resources

At times caregivers are faced with round the clock obligations. There are more families faced with this reality today. How many of us would agree twenty-four hour home care is demanding?

Family support is essential for all concerned. Designating duties and setting up a support system can be a valuable entity in time management.
Many community resources are ready and willing to provide support for those seeking assistance. It is important to note that custodial long term nursing home care is not covered by Medicare.

Due to social economics and the fact that Medicare will only pay for 100 days of skilled nursing home care under limited circumstances caregivers may need to tap into outside resources.
Medicare will pay for hospice care delivered in home, nursing home or impatient hospice for people with dementia who are determined to be near the end of life.
There is usually a family member assigned as health care proxy.
The role of a health care proxy depends on living will and state law.

The health care
 proxy is responsible for...
  • Conferring with the medical team

  • Reviewing medical records
  • Asking questions
  • The health care proxy has the authority to make any and all decisions a patients would make for themselves (including life sustaining desicions)
Advocate...It may be difficult to develop a relationship with medical professionals'. Finding a balance between asking questions and understanding the high demands placed on the medical field. can make the process a challenging task. Remember...
seeking a second opinion is your right!

You may have to be respectfully assertive. If need be you can always ask for help from the facility patient liaison or social worker.
